I’m going to preface for all our HP fans out there, but this is not a Dumbledore collaboration, although this a pretty potent potion. Created by the mad scientists at Brewery Vivant in Grand Rapids, MI, Wizard Burial Ground is a one of a kind Bourbon Barrel Aged Quadrupel Ale.
My freshly certified brewmaster paw sent me back from MI with a 4-pack of these bad boys last month. I couldn’t wait much longer to give it a try, so I grabbed a can for a hike up the Cottonwood Lake trail in BV with some friends this past weekend. After a brisk, windy hike, I cracked one open, and sweet Merlin’s beard, I can’t remember the last time I had a beer this flavorful. You are immediately met with a sweet, boozy smell. No surprise since this an 11.8% ABV quadrupel that has been aged for a year in freshly emptied bourbon barrels. The pour is smooth and didn’t make much of a head, but the aroma only gets stronger. The flavor is heavy on the caramel side, with a hint of vanilla and really nice bourbon undertone.
This is an easy beer to drink because it tastes so good, but I’d say it’s an even better beer to share. My recommendation is that you pair this beer with some friends, a hike, and some good ole’ belly laughs after a day in the mountains, so get out there and unleash your adventure!
