  • VP Debate...UpaDowna Style

The vice presidential debate airs live tonight and although we here at UpaDowna are not usually mixed up in politics we feel that it is our job, nay our duty to make the decision for you as to who the next President and Vice President will be. Juice Box and I have decided that the only patriotic way to decide who the next VP will be is to pit the state's beers against each other. So tonight we will choose beers from Delaware (Biden) and from Alaska (Palin).
  • Steve Fossett...found?

Not much of a story yet. But apparently hikers claim to have found some of missing millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett's personal items while hiking near Mammoth Lakes, California. As of now no plane wreckage has been found. Apparently the items found were a sweat shirt a small bit of cash and two Federal Aviation Administration cards with Fossett's name on them.
  • Hiking In Trail Running Shoes

After I wrote about the transition from the beefy lug-soled, full ankle supporting boots of old to the utilization of trail runners as a viable option for your backpacking excursions. Juice Box suggested that we discuss exactly how this transition is working. Well to break it down: as gear becomes lighter with technological advancements as well as the "ultra light" push hiking and backpacking has boomed into a new realm. Your body needs additional energy to consistently lift and place each foot. Think of a weightlifter, while they can do 100 repetitions using 1 pound they may only be able to do 1 repetition using 100 pounds. The same goes for the weight of your shoes. The lighter the better. Just remember NEVER compromise support. If you have hiked for years in high ankle boots take some time to strengthen your ankles prior to flashing through the next trip.
  • Cycling Porn 2008

I swiped this off of the BikeMag site from an article about the 2008 Interbike currently happening in Las Vegas, NV. This cable stay kicks ass and I was wondering if anyone had any idea what bike it is on, who makes it or more importantly where I can get some for
  • Shift to Trail runners

Over the past few years we a have seen the market for hiking boots shift from the bulky, high ankle, leather clad, beefy lug soled, 2+ pound each, steel shanked do anything boots to the simple, light, flexible, not so supportive trail runners as the hiking staple. Before trail runners were so popular and numerous when someone got into hiking/backpacking you needed these large boots to protect your ankles and give you the support for the heavy equipment and long days you would assuredly be facing upon launching into an outdoor adventure. Now as technology has advanced and lightened our gear we see that the days of the heavy boot is waning. At least for the weekend warrior or simple backpacker. Andrew Skurka showed us that a hiker can spend a great deal of time on the trail covering a great deal of ground with minimalist equipment (although since comfort is subjective to each his own).
  • GABF Brewery List

I just got an update from the folks at the Great American Beer Fest, to which JuiceBox and I will be volunteering at this year. Check out this killer line up. If you get the chance you should really try and make it out to attend this is one of the largest brew fests in the world and maybe even the largest in the galaxy!!! With 432 breweries showcasing 1969 beers you cannot lose!! Here is some info aside from the brewery list. If for some reason you cannot make it, JuiceBox and I will be diligent in our reporting of the taste and quality of each and every beer (well as many as we can). Click MORE for the complete list of attending breweries as well as links to their websites.

This is a great video that has a great message.
  • BPA study released

Over the past few months I have posted information about BPA or bisphenol A. Which is a chemical used in a wide variety of products from our beloved Nalgenes to baby bottles to the liners in cans of veggies. And while the debate over the safety of BPA has been fierce, the majority of retailers have removed products from their shelves due to the fear that BPA can lead to cancer and other nastiness.
  • Stories Of Survival

This story is an amazing example of how keeping your head about you during a survival situation can greatly increase your chances of survival in a desperate situation. A father and son swept out to sea for over 12 hours were successfully rescued. And here is a story about a kayaker that flipped and was subsequently wedged under a tree in the surging West Kiewa River in Australia.
