I think the athletes and volunteers at Paradox Sports are worthy of recognition despite the fact they aren't paid to train, compete or even just get out of bed in the morning, despite the physical and mental challenges they face every day of their lives. In light of all the terrible news and scandals surrounding competitive/professional and college athletics (Penn State, Landis, BALCO...etc), Paradox represents something worth celebrating in terms of athletic achievement- the athlete that overcomes tremendous odds in order to pursue an active lifestyle without demanding extravagant salaries and celebrity status. I think anyone who has ever attended a Paradox event can attest to this. peace, -MR

One of the reasons why I like visiting your blog so much is because it has become a daily reference I can use in order to learn new nice stuff. It's like a curiosities box that surprises you over and over again.

I went to enjoy the river and all I got was a stupid fucking tarp.

You know most of the people who go to see this (and I say this as someone who enjoyed the Central Park Gates) aren't going to get out of their car for more than a picture stop or two and aren't going to enjoy the real beauty of Colorado.

Thanks! Also, thanks for pointing out that it can be a great recovery shoe. I, unfortunately, do not run enough to ever have the need to recover. lol. Good luck with the rest of your training/racing!

Nice review. I've been wearing the Mafates for much of this season's racing. I love the cushion but, as you point out, they can be cumbersome on some singletrack. They serve as an outstanding recovery shoe too.

You're claiming to know what the sole goal of each and every local business is, like they're all the same - or more to the point, that you think they SHOULD BE all the same, that they should fit some predefined mold that you've set for what makes a "good" local business. Like you said, though, you're always free to go elsewhere. Such is the nature of competition...

  • The Great Pumpkin Ale Caper   1 year 29 weeks ago

    Well put.

  • The Great Pumpkin Ale Caper   1 year 29 weeks ago

Word on the street was that one famously overpriced brewpub here in town was charging over 15 dollars a bottle to their customers "because they would pay it." Hearing that left a bad taste in my mouth and an inclination to no longer patronize their business.

Yes, they are business owners. No, the sole goal of a local business isn't "to make money." If the spirit of community isn't important to a business, i'm perfectly fine with going elsewhere.

I think you're expecting too much, expecting that the retailers are supposed to have the same values and desires as Bristol. Just because Bristol finds value in donating its proceeds to Venetucci doesn't mean the liquor store owners have that same viewpoint. They're just buying a product, and as a product that's in short supply and high demand, they can charge a disproportionately high (compared to other beers) price for it. And for all you know, they might be donating the proceeds to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer or something. Or maybe they're just buying a Porsche with the profits. Who knows...

Let's say everyone shared your viewpoint, and all those bottles of beer stayed on the shelves. Guess what those retailers do with the size of their orders the next year? They decrease them, and then less money goes to charity due to lesser sales. Does that solve anything?

You're entitled to not buy those bottles at $10+ a pop because you don't want to get ripped off (I know I won't buy at that price!), but if you're doing it because you think you're somehow aiding the charitable process, you're wrong. Of course, I'm sure there will be someone else willing to step in and fill your shoes at the liquor store line. And if not, I guess per the law of supply and demand, prices will start going down.

Now go enjoy a nice Venetucci Pumpkin Ale... :) (unfortunately, my one growler and bomber I got at the release are already gone. :( )

  • The Great Pumpkin Ale Caper   1 year 29 weeks ago

Agreed. The point is that if a product is advertised and supported by the retailers as one in which all proceeds go back to the organization than this is no more than folks capitalizing on a good deed. To me this seems like a classic push to make a few extra dimes off of someone else's good intentions. I can see fluctuation in prices through out the market but a difference of almost 100% is crazy and speaks to individual greed, which given the state of our economy is exactly what so many folks are fired up about.

  • The Great Pumpkin Ale Caper   1 year 29 weeks ago

We do! However the 40 cents a pound does not equate to the cash that folks spend on the beer. The point of the article is that it is important to know what money goes to what purpose. Buying a bomber at $6 as opposed to $10 tells the tale of individual greed which kind of overshadows the point of the beer. I think that folks should simply be aware that when they spend $10/bomber that does not mean the additional $4 also goes to the farm (most shops sell the bomber for $6). So we encourage our readership to shop smart and know your retailer.

    Also I wanted to add:
Let's say Bristol says a couple cases to a local restaurant. Is it actually not okay for that restaurant then to make a profit from the beer? I mean Bristol knew they were selling to a place that needs to make money to survive. The restaurant hasn't necessarily entered into the same contract that Bristol has with Venetucci...

  • The Great Pumpkin Ale Caper   1 year 29 weeks ago

    Sorry for the typos!

"You know, you could buy your own pumpkins from Venetucci and brew your own beer!"

  • The Great Pumpkin Ale Caper   1 year 29 weeks ago

I hear ya Eric. I actually looked at it the same way or fairly similar. Yeti and I were talking about it and I said it's just business, and the only people to blame are ourselves for enabling them to do this. Then he reminded me that they are still sold at the store with the impression given to the customer that 100% of the proceeds are given back to the farm. The initial price yes, but you can't fairly mark up the cost keep the profits and still say it's for charity. It is no longer 100% then. I'm running over to http://www.focusonthebeer.com now to see what's up. Take care brother!

  • The Great Pumpkin Ale Caper   1 year 29 weeks ago

I'm glad you wised up. You know, you buy your own pumpkins from Venetucci and beer your own beer!

  • The Great Pumpkin Ale Caper   1 year 29 weeks ago

A really interesting observation that definitely gets overlooked. I wonder how many of the liquor stores even consider these things? I've seen these things happen before and just posted a follow up on our blog as well because it's an important topic. On the one hand, Bristol sets their own price for the beer, and once it changes hands there's nothing they can do about it. The profits they receive still go to the farm, so the question is, is it then wrong for the next person, let alone a business, to profit off of it if they've already paid Bristol's asking price? That's a dilemma for sure...

Part of me wants to say the profits from the shop should go to Venetucci, but the other part of me says that they didn't enter any contract with Venetucci or Bristol (that we know of) to give off their profits - Bristol got their money and that's that. The price jacking then contributes to the buzz of the beer, that it sells out within a day contributes to the buzz, and therefore more people are talking about Venetucci and Bristol. Is this bad? I don't know, I'm torn. I appreciate your post and I personally would avoid paying the higher prices for the reason you mention.

I could NOT agree more!!! Sadly, with another La Niña winter on hand, we won't see the snow. It'll be cold, it'll be windy, and it'll be dry. BOOOOO! Let's have a winter like that which had the residents of Breckenridge commuting through town via snow tunnel!!
