Let’s be honest, creative artwork does nothing but help when choosing a new beer to try. Add to that the fact that Scott reviewed another beer from Pipeworks Brewing (Ninja vs Unicorn) a few months back and well, it seemed like a safe bet to try another in the series. I know there are tons of great beers out there and yes I could have chosen any one of them for this week’s BOTW, but to be honest, this just felt right. It was the total package, everything I was looking for on a Sunday afternoon.
This week’s BOTW is the Blood of the Unicorn. Blood of the Unicorn is labeled as a hoppy red ale that has a nice citrus introduction which is rapidly followed up with a sweet malt that was all but non existent at first, but quickly comes in full force. Pouring the ale into a pint I noticed a full bodied creamy tan head that provides sticky lacing all the way down the glass. I am having trouble finding the words to describe the aroma of this beer as it is flirting somewhere between piney and sweet fruit. At 6.5% ABV it is not a crushable session beer but this one was hard to put down once it hit my lips.
Back to the artwork. As with other Pipeworks beers the amazing art of Jason Burke from Ink & Lead designs is loud and proud adding to this already amazing beer. And while I am not a tattoo guy, art like this would make the short list of ink I would consider should I ever decide to make the leap.
