Hillsound Trail Crampon

Now, now, before you go and get your expert climbing panties all in a twist, let me be the first to say: YES! These DO NOT look/act like your average "crampon". However, I can personally vouch that these bad boys do the job (and for a good price, around $59). Granted, mine were not tested on the trails of the Himalayas, I did use them in my recent adventures in Ouray Ice Park. The Hillsound Trail Crampons feature:

  • Spike Material: S50C Carbon steel
  • Harness Material: Elastomor
  • Weight: 448g (S); 460g (M); 480g (L) 500g(XL)
  • Compressive Strength: 19,572N
  • Tensile Strength: 1,162N
  • Rockwell Hardness: 47HRC
  • MSRP $59

With a reported resistance to temps dropping in the -70 to -76 degree Fahrenheit range these bad boys should hold up to what ever you can through at them. One feature I liked is that the elastic harness is also a bit higher on the sides of the foot to avoid snow pack. The second feature I like about this product  is the Velcro strap on top which adds a bit of extra comfort knowing these spikes are not going anywhere. They are relatively easy to put on and can be worn on either foot. Place over the toe, pull onto the heel, Velcro over the top and ice, watch out! If you're looking for an aggressive tread just shy of a traditional "crampon", this is a great choice! *DISCLAIMER* Since these are not "traditional crampons" they should not be used for vertical ice climbing. ;)
