So I’ve made no attempt to hide my excitement about this bottle around my friends that I refer to as family. The boys at Dutch Bros. Coffee came out with this awesome 18-ounce/532 mL, vacuum insulated Hydro Flask Bottle two months ago, and I’ve carried it around like my cell phone everywhere I go since.
Hydro Flask is based out of the beautiful state of Oregon in Bend and settled up against the Cascade Mountains which I highly recommend visiting by the way. The mission statement for Hydro is simple “Free the world from lukewarm water, produce the highest quality flasks, provide excellent customer service and make a difference in their local community", which is my favorite.
I’ve had ice water in it for days and the ice doesn’t melt and the bottle doesn’t sweat. I’ve put scalding hot coffee in it, only — to my dismay — to realize it was still too hot to drink 4 or 5 hours later. I’ve reused it post-coffee, sans-washing, forgot my cup whiskey nights and have been surprised to find my water tasted as it should, instead of water with a hint of espresso or whiskey which isn’t a bad thing in anyway.
I’ve even been climbing with it tucked into my gear bag and had it fall out onto the rocks and it came away without a scratch. Winning!!!
Hydro Flask promises their bottles will keep your cold drinks cold for 24 hours, and hot drinks hot for 12 hours. How’s that possible?
“All of their bottles are made with a vacuum between the two walls of 18/8 stainless steel. “This vacuum practically eliminates heat (or cold) transfer due to the lack of matter, as air is needed to conduct the transfer of heat or cold. It all boils down to science really.”
My science knowledge is a little rusty, most of it now comes from my lovely wife “Kel.” (Nerd)
The only downside is that Hydro boys don’t recommend putting this bottle in the dishwasher, but that’s a small negative compared to the bottle’s wide-mouth selection of positives. It’s also recyclable J and has a 100-year or lifetime guarantee, whichever comes first. You might recycle yourself before the bottle’s warranty expires. They guarantee dents and dings too which is awesome for us “Dirt Bags”.
At the end I love it so much (don’t roll your eyes) that I feel it deserves some kind of corny haiku nickname:
Oh so cold, you’re hot
Double-wall and stainless steel
Theft by cube-mate, RAWR
No one has actually taken it yet, mostly because they’d have to pry it from my not-so-cold-because-the-bottle-is-so-well-insulated hands. Now get out there and enjoy the outdoors and take a warm coffee with ya in the coming cold months ahead.
Prices start at $19.99 for the 12oz standard mouth bottle to $49.99 for the 64oz growler. The bottle I got was made for Dutch Bros and is in Matte Black, which is not currrently available on the Hydroflask website. More information here. (http://www.hydroflask.com/)
