I tell you what, Colorado Springs has some killer breweries – Red Leg Brewing is no exception. Established on July 4th, 2013, Red Leg Brewing is the creation of some of our countries Veterans, with a meaningful backstory to their name. I recommend dropping in sometime to learn more about their history yourself.
I had the opportunity to head up to Grand Lake this past weekend with a guys group I’m a part of, and one of the brews we brought along was the Ivy 100 Howizter Amber Anniversary Ale from Red Leg Brewing. I know the picture doesn’t give a good look at the beer in a glass, but I didn’t want to end up with glass shards in my pack, so I opted for the can + koozie route on the hike that day. It was the first amber I’ve had in quite a while, and it may have rekindled my love for slightly darker beers.
Deep red in color, the Ivy 100 had a good caramel and malt aroma that you would expect from an amber. The caramel came out in the flavor as well, and it finished nicely with a solid malty undertone. I’ve had ambers in the past that put a little too much emphasis on the malt on the backend, but the Ivy 100 provided just the right finish. One thing I noticed was that I didn’t get much bitterness or hop flavor, but I actually liked this about it. I’ve been on an IPA kick lately, so it was a welcome break from the stronger hop-forward flavors I’ve been reviewing the past couple weeks. Overall, I found the flavor profile to be very well done, and it was a great amber.
This week’s review is a timely one, because this upcoming Wednesday, March 7th, we will be partnering with Red Leg for a beer benefit night! For every beer purchased at the taproom between 6-8pm, $1 will go to support UpaDowna. We would love to see as many people as possible come out and support the amazing Red Leg team, and in turn, support us as well. If you have any questions, just let us know, we would be happy to fill you in!
That wraps up this week’s Beer Of The Weekend, so until next time, be sure to get out there and unleash your adventure!
