Keep It Fresh!

Don't let your kit expire before you do! There are many forms of end of the world, Dooms Day Preppers out there. As farfetched as some of them may seem, the reality is there is nothing wrong with having an emergency/readiness plan and a solid kit to fall back on. This read isn't going to turn into an end of the world preparedness plan (I hope), but after bs-ing with a friend this morning a couple things dawned on me that are typically over looked with "Go-Bags" and kits. For starters if you are storing food for yourself and others be aware of the shelf life! Check your goods for expiration dates and keep fresh or newer product with longer shelf life circulating. This goes further than food. Check batteries, tablets, pills, anything with an expiration date. I can't tell you how many iodine tablets I have that expired before use. Keep it updated! Checking it annually is probably a good place to start and restocking it a little here and there is a little easier on the budget. When it comes to food find things that last and find items you don't particularly like. Stocking your rations with food you don't enjoy as much will help the inventory last longer. Nutrition is key! Another thing you don't hear as much about is vitamins and supplements. Stock up on these things you'll be less likely to have available and if you have allergies or need certain medications it's a good idea to have a little extra on hand as well.

For those more on the fly who keep a kit in their vehicle or a "Go-Bag" readily available, remember to also check the bag itself. They usually sit for a long time. This can cause weight baring damage to the folds and creases. The bags or packs themselves can also become pretty cruddy with mold and other gunk. If there is food in there also store your kit where critters and creepy crawlies are less likely to get to it.

This is a fun subject to tackle, but hard to stop. We could go on and on and take it in many different directions. Maybe there will be more to follow on this subject? Just a little food for thought this morning after chatting with my buddy No spode, all around outdoors enthusiast, lover of art, and a bank of knowledge. Check him out on Twitter @Nospode or Facebook @No Spode. Thanks again buddy, it was a fun chat!
