I'm a baby when it comes to my feet and what I put on them. After 7 surgeries and an on trail removal of my big toenail (after bashing a rock), I think I've earned that though. A make or brake for any backpacking trip, summit attempt, hike, or anything of the sort is going to be your feet. When preparing for a trip so many people look their feet over, but something on the level of one bad blister can kill the whole experience. I've always steered towards Merrell shoes and boots when it came to outdoor footwear, and Vibram® soles has always been a must, but recently I have given a look outside of what I have always known and trusted, I have literally stepped out of my comfort zone. For the last couple of months I've had the pleasure of dawning a pair of LOWA Renegade GTX hikers.
They are a mid size hiking boot, which include the famous GORE-TEX® waterproof lining which is always diligent in the fight to keep our feet dry this combined with MONOWRAP® Evo construction for an even lighter and sleeker profile, and the legendary gripping soles made by Vibram®.
I've been amazed by the comfort of these boots since the first moment I put them on. I truly believed I could skip the whole "braking them in" process, but experience, traditions, and rituals wouldn't allow me to do so. As for their performance it was more of the same, amazing! These boots are nice enough looking for me to wear with business casual dress to work, yet tough enough for heavy trails, climbing scree covered peaks, forging waterfronts, and post holing through knee high snow. As much as I love these boots, I do wish the toe protection came up a little higher. Although having a big toe cup usually results in more weight and less breathability. I'm not willing to sacrifice those two comforts, so I'll pay more attention to what I'm about to bash my toes into.
