I typically go for a good pair of trail runners over hiking boots, as I’ve often found hiking boots to feel heavier or uncomfortable in comparison. That being said, I tried on the Lowa Renegades with a little bit of skepticism, and was pleasantly surprised. The Renegades weigh in at a relatively light 2 lbs 7 oz, and don’t feel clunky or heavy.  A roomy toe-box, and well-constructed ankle support felt comfortable from the get-go, without any breaking in time. I tested the boots out in several inches of snow on top of slick ice, and the extra ankle support definitely helped keep me in one piece as I  pioneered like an arctic explorer. The non slip soles proved to be a big help allowing me more grip than I thought would have been possible, and the GORE-TEX® lining kept my feet warm and dry in wet and cold conditions.  Overall the Renegades exceeded my expectations for comfort and fit.  Stay tuned for an updated review in a few months, after I’ve had a chance to test the boots out in summer trail and weather conditions, and had an chance to really test durability.
