Winter Warlock

Going, going, gone! With it being a beautiful blue bird 70° day here in Colorado Springs, I guess it’s a little out of character to be choosing a winter beer for this week’s BOTW. But for those of you who love a good Oatmeal Stout you’ll understand why. As the season’s change so do the beers and soon stouts will be traded in for pilsners and those of other sorts. A prime example of this is the Winter Warlock Oatmeal Stout from Bristol Brewing Company, a local’s favorite here in Colorado Springs.

Unfortunately this year’s run of Winter Warlock is nearing its end. Soon Winter Warlock will tap out and we’ll have to wait until next year to get our hands on this stout. For you die hard Winter Warlock lovers that line up for the tapping and release parties year after year, there’s no need to panic yet. You can still find this delicious Oatmeal Stout on the shelves, but don’t drag your feet because when it’s gone, it’s gone.

This tasty treat of a beer pours to a very dark brown body with a full fluffy opaque head, while bold toasty aromas and sweet hints of vanilla linger from the pint. Roasted malts and bitter chocolate nip at your taste buds, that rolls over to a slight coffee bitterness on the follow. The texture is smooth and creamy with a delicious big body feel. Warlock pairs great with a long day of play or work in the snow, fresh baked cookies, Bristol’s Compass IPA (mixing the two is one of our favorites), more Winter Warlock, and a blazing fire.

This was the last Winter Warlock in my beer cache for this season. I don’t care if some ground hog sees his shadow or not, my selection of beer seems to hold pretty true to the changing of seasons year after year. With that being said, I savored every last drop of this stout and I’m now officially ready for warmer weather and the new seasonal ales that follow with it.
