Oatmeal Stout

Photo:

Cold months are made for big hearty beers. Thick and heavy, you know like a meal in a bottle one that leaves you sopping up the foam with a roll and so full you can barely move. And this is what I was looking for in this beer. I mean it was dark as sin and the head was a bit lacy but I felt it would produce a meaty mouth feel, unfortunately I was wrong. Don't misinterpret my words, this beer is good just not great. Or maybe it is my issue, you see when I think of Oatmeal Stouts I default to the gruel I grew up on where my spoon would stand up straight in the air and I could easily mold it into Rodin's famous Thinker should I so chose. But that is my bias, so lets look at this beer with out preconceptions.

Ninkasi Brewing company has produced their Oatmeal Stout consistently for the past few years and all in all it is not to bad of a beer. A bit light however the mouthfeel is medium and a bit creamy with a nice aroma of roasted malts. With each sip I had of this stout I was left wondering about the complexity of the beer and each next sip was another trip through the myriad of flavors that to me are a bit different than what I have come to know in this style. That being said any beer that leaves you wanting the next sip is a good beer and thus is deserving of our beer of the week.

Thanks to Dana for lugging this beast back from Oregon for us to try!
